Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head ~ West Coast RV Adventure 2023 ~ Day 28 & Day 29

Canadians are nonplussed by rain. They just walk in it. No raincoat. No umbrella. Maybe a hat, maybe not. So when mom walked into the airport to return our rental car with a raincoat on and holding an umbrella, she got a bunch of funny looks. Really? These people just don’t know how banchee woman crazy her hair turns when it gets damp!! But it does help the flowers bloom. These beauties were growing in our campsite.

So today we say goodbye to Vancouver Island and Canada. And Dad says that as of today, we’re headed home. I’m not sure how I feel about that…

We took a different ferry, the BC Ferry from Schwartz Bay to Twassasen. So yep, we drove into the belly of the big ship again. That’s really a weird feeling that I’m not sure I’d ever grow accustom to. After we got off the ferry, we drove for a bit and then went through customs in our LHOW to get back in the USA.

We made a really fun stop to visit one of my brother, Michael’s best friend from college and his family. McLean and Mary Moore had very recently moved from the east coast to Bellingham, Washington. So we stopped for a quick afternoon visit and to share a yummy early pizza dinner with the Rabb family. Their three kids were so cute. I was really gentle with them and they liked me. They have a big, boisterous dog that they kept outside. I was really grateful for that! It was really fun letting Quinna, Bonnie and Peter pet me and giving them kisses.

The Rabb’s suggested we take a scenic route, Chuckanut Road on our way south because it overlooks the bay. Even with the clouds, it was pretty.

Then we went through Bellevue, which is obviously a big city. The highway had four lanes in each direction!! And then shortly later, there were six lanes! What?? We haven’t seen this many lanes since the San Francisco Bay Area!

Next we headed up over mountain pass cloaked with clouds that looked as if they were full of rain. But on the other side of the mountain, we found sunshine and warmer weather!

Ellensburg Washington was our destination. Guess what??? Okay, you’ll really NEVER guess, so I’ll tell you. Next Saturday, like a week from when we were there, they were holding their annual dachshund festival. Can you believe it? An annual dachshund festival! Man, we were just one week too early. Or not…because if you know me, I really have no desire to be around that many other dogs, even if they are dachshunds! Our campground was pretty cool though. There were lots of kids playing. Obviously, school is out. It was also on a river that moved really fast! No way was I going close to it!

The next morning we were up and out earlier than usual. Dad said we had a long day of driving. And it turned out we also had lots of different topography today. We left the foothills and went into a desert. Then we encountered fertile fields filled with crops. The weirdest thing we saw being grown were hops. Mom couldn’t get a picture though cuz Dad just whizzed by. (I think he’s ready to get home.) Next we were in wine country again, this time along the Columbia River. Mom was a little disappointed that it was too early to stop and taste more wine. She really likes her wine! Soon we were back in the foothills and then mountains covered with trees.

We stopped for gas, groceries and lunch in La Grande. There was a restaurant across from the gas station called Cinco de Mayo. Mom and Dad thought the name was a good sign and decided to eat there. Yea, turns out it wasn’t. It was a really bad lunch. Dad said PB&J in the LHOW would have been better. But one bad meal in 29 days isn’t really anything to complain about!

Our KOA campground tonight was in Meridian, Idaho in the middle of a neighborhood. That sure was a first! But it was nice, and we saw a pretty sunset. We sat outside until 10 pm cuz it was still light. Crazy!
