Beach Baby ~ West Coast RV Adventure 2023 ~ Day 19
If you know my Mom, you know she got up and took a walk on the beach this morning. If there’s a beach nearby, she’s on it, baby! So Dad and I went along to protect her. She said it was sentimental to walk this beach in Brookings, Oregon again as it brought back memories of her aunt, gram, mom and sister. Her aunt used to live here, and Mom and Auntie Gay would bring their Gramand Mom up to visit her every year. Her sister is the only one I know cuz she’s the only one still living, and I know Auntie Gay will love hearing about it. It sure is a big, pretty beach.
We saw some interesting things on this beach walk. This beach has a lot of driftwood high on the beach. I guess big storms come along and dislodge trees that then float in the ocean and break apart. Then the limbs or driftwood are brought back to shore with the waves. Boy was there a lot! Mom said when she used to come, the hotel they stayed in (see picture) would have bonfires at night. Also, instead of seashells, it had a lot of really smooth stones of all different colors. The next interesting thing made me sad. It was a weird looking fort built with driftwood up against the huge cliff rocks. Mom said that someone was actually living there, someone who didn’t have a home. Mom and Dad have been talking a lot about the homeless issue in Northern California and Oregon. We’ve been seeing homeless camps in all sorts of odd places. This fort didn’t look like a very warm or comfortable home. I’m really glad that I have a nice home to live in. And the last interesting thing was really the best! We saw a seal playing in the waves. He made it look much easier than those surfer guys yesterday.
We broke camp and Mom showed Dad where Auntie Dadie and Uncle Paul used to live in Brookings. Then we headed north from Brookings through Gold Beach and beyond to explore some really cool rocky shoreline. And rocky it sure was!! There was one cove that had rocks that made a natural bridge. Another area had lots of huge rocks in the water. One even had grass growing on it! It was really windy and we could see the grass blowing on top of it out in the water! That was crazy! Another rock had an arch in it. Boy, the water must be really powerful to have carved these interesting shapes and features in the rock.
We’d walk out to look at the views of the ocean and then hop back in the LHOW. As in Northern California, Oregon has lots of creeks and rivers that hit the ocean. The Rogue River was especially pretty. Mom and Dad stopped for lunch in Port Orford at another pretty spot, Battle Rock Park. Some battle happened between some Indians and some explorers. I didn’t get the details cause I was tired from all the walking in the wind. So I napped while Mom and Dad enjoyed yummy fresh ling cod tacos at a table with a pretty view.
Our next stop was Cape Blanco State Park. It has the oldest lighthouse in Oregon, and it the northernmost point in the contiguous United States. Boy was it windy! When we opened the LHOW doors, a piece of paper blew out and flew down the hill. Ever the Eagle Scout, Dad hopped the fence and went trudging after it. Of course, I went along to help. It was so windy and cold that even the cows were laying down to try to stay warm.
The next stop was for Dad. We drove through Bandon Dunes to check out the golf courses. It seemed to me they were in the middle of nowhere and not at all pretty like Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay. But what do I know? I don’t play golf. Anyway, Dad took his golf clubs out and went and hit some balls while Mom and I stayed nice and warm in the sunny LHOW and wrote about my travels. Then as we were driving to the clubhouse, a deer popped out of the bushes to say hi. She just stopped and stared at us while we stared back at her. She was really pretty. I think we could be friends.
After Bandon Dunes we drove for a while more. I was really getting tired of being in my little car seat. Luckily, Mom understands me pretty well, so I convinced her to let me snuggle on her lap for a bit.
Home tonight was a great campground near Coos Bay, and our campsite was just a really short walk from the beach. So you know as soon as Dad got us connected, we took a walk to explore the beach. It was another HUGE, pretty beach with soft waves and hard sand that was fun to run on! I loved it…even if there were some other dogs around.
After that, Dad built a campfire and Mom and Dad talked to some of their friends. The wifi was out, so once again we were “disconnected” and couldn’t post. As we were shutting down for the night, Mom and I had to walk out on the beach one last time to see the sunset. It was SO pretty!
Yep, another great day! Anytime you start and end the day with a walk on a pretty beach, baby, it’s a great day!
