Rainy Days & Mondays Don’t Get Me Down
Hope Travels 2023. ~ The West Coast RV Adventure ~ Day 2 & 3
We woke up to a rainy morning, and Dad suggested we just take it easy and wait for the rain to move along. And so we did. I got to stay in my favorite place, and Mom opened the blind so I could keep an eye on things outside.
We got on the road for a long day of driving and crossed into New Mexico. Sometimes I get bored and Mom and I chat. And sometimes I have to tell her it’s time to do my business. She gets me though, so it’s all good. I just don’t like it when she tells me to cross my legs for another 20 minutes or so. But I do it.
The topography was pretty in its own way, I guess. And Mom kept saying how pretty the blue sky and clouds were. She also kept saying how grateful she was that her Good Lord didn’t have her born in the 1800s when she’d be going across these plains in a covered wagon wearing a ridiculous dress with even crazier undergarments on. I have no idea what that means, but she keeps saying it!
We had lunch in the Little House on Wheels (LHOW) at a rest area, and then traveled on. We were all glad to get to our cute little campsite in Grants, NM. We had an end spot with a beautiful view. Mom and Dad set up camp and then enjoyed some kind of drink that made them smile while catching up on stuff.
And guess what? The campsite in Grants, NM was also right next to a train track! But it offered free breakfast for Mom and Dad. I had to stay in the LHOW. Once we got on the road, we saw some pretty landscape again.
Mom was determined to have a more interesting lunch stop, so we went to the Petrified Forest National Park. They had lunch at a nice little picnic site while I did a little sunbathing.
Then we saw all sorts of interesting topography. It was kinda like the Badlands from our last trip, and Dad said it was just a little like the Grand Canyon, but not much. Although John Muir thinks it’s as great as the Grand Canyon. Both Mom and Dad say, “whatever!” We saw weird land formations, really old writing on rocks called petroglyphics (humans write on rocks to communicate and dogs pee on them…go figure!) dirt that looked like elephants skin and petrified wood. We also saw the root of a bush reaching several feet down into the earth. Mom said there were all sorts of interesting life lessons we could draw from that. And then we saw a beautiful bunch of yellow flowers blooming amidst the barrren dessert. Mom really liked that and said it was proof that God’s glory can shine through just about anything.
We hiked at the Blue Mesa area. But it was warm, we were in higher elevation, and oh yeah, I’m a black dog with short legs, so I said, “enough!” After a while, I sat right down on the trail and refused to move. Luckily, Mom didn’t get a picture of that. Dad carried me the rest of the way.
The Petrified Forest was a nice diversion from an otherwise really long day of driving. But after we left there, we headed on to Seligman. It was pretty windy for a while and a little rainy, but Dad drove like an expert. I got tired of my car seat, so Mom let me sleep on the floor in my bed between Mom and Dad. I’m still buckled in with my leash, so don’t you worry about my safety, Granny.
We got to our campground in Seligman and got settled in. Mom and Dad were doing there catching up thing and drinking something that made them smile. All of a sudden, they started laughing really hard. And yup, right along the campground, guess what we saw?
They say “KOA Journey Kampgrounds” really means “next to a train track!” Sure hope we all sleep well tonight.
