Happy Anniversary, Baby!

Hope Travels ~ West Coast RV Adventure 2023 ~ Day 11

Well, today was a special day…Happy Anniversary to Mom and Dad. (It was really May 24.) Can you believe it? They’ve survived one another and three dachshunds for 37 years! Well, I’m the third, and they’re not done with me yet. So I guess they have several more years together at least!

Unfortunately, we had to leave Big Sur, but we headed for the 17 mile drive, which Mom promised would be really pretty. We hit some beautiful sites, and our first stop was at Spanish Bay Golf Course. I got left in the LHOW while they walked around and reminisced from previous visits.

The next stop was The Lodge at Pebble Beach. Same story. They tell me to take a nap, but there’s no way I can do that! I have to protect the LHOW!. Mom and Dad had a special anniversary lunch in the dining room there. Mom took Dad there a million years ago for the first time when he had a really good sales year at a small company he worked for, so they reminisced some more.

After leaving Pebble, that’s what Dad calls it, we drove around the Monterey Bay through the Watsonville area where they grow they sweetest strawberries and up through Santa Cruz.

We tried to go to a beach in Santa Cruz, but it was closed. What’s going on in California that so many places we want to go are closed?!!? Sheesh! But as we were driving through this little neighborhood a few blocks off the beach bluff, Dad wanted Mom to look up real estate values. So (very) little houses were well loved and others were total dumps. Do you know how much a two bedroom, one bath, 600 square foot house goes for there? $1.4M CRAZY!!

Our last stop of the day was a little beach, where once again, a river was meeting the ocean. We all enjoyed a little walk on the beach as another nice part of Mom and Dad’s anniversary celebration.

Then we found our campground. It’s really cool, right across Highway 1 from the beach with eucalyptus trees again. We walked around it and saw some fun little tent cabins, a garden with vegetables and herbs, horse stables, lots of bunnies and birds. Mom was excited to see our first California Quail of the trip. They are goofy looking birds that scoot along the ground more than fly. There was also a beautiful fuschia bush which reminded Mom of her Dad’s garden when she was little.

Back at the LHOW, we determined that, once again, there was no wifi! So we were still off the grid. Dad couldn’t believe it! Just an hour over the mountain to the east is Silicon Valley but we have no connectivity. Thanks for being patient with my delayed posts. I’m glad you’re still reading along! Oh, and wish my Mom and Dad a happy anniversary when you see them. Or as Mom always says, let the honeymoon continue! They are certainly still having fun.
